Thornton Wilder’s Timeless Classic: Our Town

I just got finished reading the 3 act play Our Town (Daily Life, Love And Marraige, and Death) written by American Author, Thornton Wilder in 1938. It was so enlightening. If you haven’t read this book recently it’s worth another shot. He does a great job of building up a small town lifestyle of people with dreams and ambitions trapped in Grover’s Corners. People come and go through out the firts two acts in wide eyed curiosity of themselves, going about day-to-day . Act three ripped me to shreads.

One of the main characters dies in childbirth, and is talking with the other deceased about their life on earth. They tell her about how the dead can re-live their lives ( something she was yearning to do), but watch themselves in the process. (“You not only live it; you watch yourself living it.”) They strain to entice her to refrain from revisiting her past and do finally convince her to seek out an unimportant day.

She realizes it was a dreadfulk error, and she immediatley regrets her decision. She talks to a fore mentioned character in one of the previous acts, a drunken chior master who assumedly ended his life in a drunken suicide. He harshly scolds her to the Idea that we waste life as we live it, Human existence is only ignorence and blindness.

He said in reply to her “i should have listened to them”

“Yes, now you know. Now you know! That’s what it was to be alive. To move about in a cloud of ignorance; to go up and down trampling on the feelings of those…those about you. To spend and waste time as though you had a million years. To be always at the merc of one self-centered passion, or another. Now you know-that’s the happy existence you wanted to go back to. Ignorance and blindness.”

So basically Live your life with GREAT APPRECIATION. It’s wonderful.
